How far have we come in the process of negotiations with the EU in the field of environmental protection?

Enacting and implementing laws in the areas of waste management, air and water quality preservation and biodiversity protection will be the key activities that Serbia should undertake in order to close Chapter 27 and harmonize its environmental policies with EU standards, it was said at the meeting of the Alliance for Environmental Protection in NALED.

On this occasion, the members of NALED were presented with the results and goals of the project "EU for the improvement of planning and implementation of Chapter 27 in Serbia", which, with the support of the European Union, is being implemented by DAI, in partnership with Dwoper, the consulting firm Expertise&Advisors and NALED, and whose beneficiary is the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The aim of the project is to bridge the gap between EU and national legislation by integrating best practices from EU member states, ensuring effective implementation at all levels.

- At least 15 national planning documents will be developed or revised, including plans for the implementation of individual directives and long-term investment strategies. Harmonization of legislation will be a key component, with the preparation of around 40 legal acts to align with EU standards in the field of environmental protection. In parallel with that, Serbia's reporting mechanisms will be improved in order to fulfill the obligations towards the EU within the framework of 10 priority directives - explained Milana Pavlović, project director from DAI, which leads the consortium of implementation partners.

Svetlana Žekova, a key expert and team leader, led the members of the Alliance through the specific phases and activities of the project, who explained how the drafting of legal and strategic documents will improve institutional capacities and facilitate the implementation of regulations at the local level.

Drafting and revision of strategic documents and legal acts relevant to the field of environmental protection is underway, which will be presented to the wider interested public upon completion.

The project also includes the exchange of knowledge through study visits to EU member states, in order to familiarize institutions in Serbia with the best practices in the field of environmental protection management and compliance with EU regulations.

After completion, all documents will be published on the euzatebe.rs page, and members of NALED will have the opportunity to participate in their creation by giving comments.
